Of course you can. Just amp up the human factor

An “engaged employee” is one who is fully involved in, and enthusiastic about their work, and thus will act in a way that furthers their organisation’s interests (Wikipedia)

To be engaged employees need to have an emotional connection with their workplace.
Rewarding people with external motivators (eg bonuses) encourages people to be motivated by something outside of themselves which does not create an emotional connection.

A recent article in the “Training Journal” (http://www.trainingjournal.com/feature/articles-features-employee-engagement-is-love/) reminds us

“Employers tend to forget that HUMAN engaging strategies are the most rewarding. Latest research shows that not everybody is interested in a pay rise or a promotion, the trend shows that an increase of praise from senior leadership and direct managers are now most appreciated.”

So next time you’re concerned that your employees are feeling disengaged increase the frequency of your recognition strategies.
Besides increasing engagement – it also just feels good.
